I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Olya and I am the founder of SweetPearlCats, a small home based cattery located in the PNW. Raising kittens is a family affair. My husband, children, and I all interact with our adults and kittens throughout the day. We are a Christian, homeschooling, food loving, adventure seeking, busy household who love our kitties and consider them a part of our family. We also speak Russian and Ukrainian so you might hear some of that on our home videos. :)
We breed beautiful, quality, and healthy Scottish Fold, Scottish Straight, British Longhair and British Shorthair kittens. My focus is to preserve the beauty of the breeds I am working with, and encourage the best personality development for each individual kitten we raise. I strive to encourage good habits and deter negative ones. My goal is to raise healthy, well mannered, loving, socialized, snuggly bundles who will bring years of warmth and joy to your home.
Feel free to explore this site and our other social media outlets, reach out and introduce yourself and what you're looking for, we'd love to hear from you! Scroll to the bottom of this page to read our FAQ. Happy browsing. :)
Kind Regards, Olya
Our approach is Quality over Quantity.
All of our breeding cats are screened at the appropriate age for Genetic Defects, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), Feline Leukemia Virus (FELV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) via ultrasound, and blood compatibility.
We also perform x-rays on hocks for our Scottish Fold line as well as check for the 'fold gene' (Osteochondrodysplasia) on any new breeding stock to ensure they only carry a single copy of this gene. Scottish Straights do not inherit ANY copies.
You may view testing summaries on each sire / dam's bio.
Doing this preventative testing greatly reduces the chances of producing a sick kitten, and allows us to confidently provide a genetic guarantee on all of our kittens.
We also take many of our parents to cat shows where they are examined physically by judges and experts. They are judged for conformation, temperament, and matching the breed standard.
Shipping rates vary by destination and destination import requirements, however in general...
-Pet Cargo in the USA is about $400-$600 depending on the Airline + $150 additional Vet Cost for Travel Health Certificate Examination + Vaccine within 10 days of travel & $40 pet carrier. For remote or limited flight destinations, additional boarding fees may be required for overnight layovers.
-We always recommend local pickup at Spokane (GEG) Airport or at our home as this is the least stressful on the kitten, and price wise, often it is the same to fly domestically vs cargo. Airlines typically only charge $75-$200 to bring a pet with you in cabin.
-We can also deliver via ground transport locally or in cabin flight for an additional fee depending on distance/location.
-Pet Nanny service is another option and varies by the courier service as well as any boarding fees.
All of our kittens come with Lifetime Breeder Support, Microchipping, Genetic Health Guarantee, 1 Month Pet Insurance, Vet Examinations, Vaccinations, and an extensive take home kit to help you get started.
All of our kittens leave under a Spay / Neuter Legally Binding Agreement. We believe in protecting your kitten’s health and hormones and let them grow to a healthy age before spay/neuter.
We work with a company called SpaySecure to ensure cat sterilization at a healthy age. They’ll follow up with you to provide advice and reminders, ensuring
your kitten gets spayed or neutered safely.
Exceptions apply to Retirees, or cats already de-sexed or rehomed with Breeding Rights.
Joining the waiting list gives you the best chance of pairing with your desired kitten including traits and personality. There is a $100 nonrefundable fee to join and have priority selection of a kitten.
Is it a requirement? Absolutely not! In fact we do not encourage joining the waiting list if you are not ready to commit to getting a kitten specifically from us.
If you are shopping around, feel free to keep an eye on our Instagram, Kittens Page on this website, or send an inquiry through our contact form for Available Kittens or Upcoming litters.
Here are some differences / similarities about the breeds...
Physical:
Both breeds are a medium sized cat with round faces and plush, soft fur. They can come in longhair or shorthair varieties and many colors.
British cats tend to have wider, thicker, boning, denser plush fur that is more coarse to the touch, and slightly almond eye shape.
Scottish cats can come in straight or folded ears, less stocky, soft, plush, silker fur, and rounder eyes compared to the British. In the silver varieties, Scottish tend to have smaller rounder ears compared to British.
Temperament:
Both breeds are laid back, affectionate, mild tempered, medium / low activity level, and do well with families or other pets. They are trainable both for tricks & leash walking if desired.
Scottish cats tend to be more of a lap cat whereas British tend to be more independent. You'll hear that British don't like to be carried compared to Scottish cats, however in practice, we find that each kitten has their own personality and the British can also be very snuggly and attached when socialized early on.
We breed not just for looks and health but highly focus on temperament and socialization. Each kitten has their own personality varying from attached/needy to independent and adventurous and in between. Some kittens are quiet while others are chatty. It is fun to see their personalities develop and blossom.
Health:
Both breeds are generally healthy breeds and can live long, fulfilling lives.
As there are inherent diseases to any cat, we do extensive preventative testing to minimize the risks.
Scottish Folds in particular carry the fold gene that causes osteochondrodysplasia - a cartilage disorder affecting the joints. This gene is responsible for giving these cats their cute owl like appearance, however proper breeding selection and management of this trait is vital. All cats with folded ears should receive Cosequin / Glucosamine for joint health for life as well as good nutrition. The presentation of this gene varies from no effect to potentially serious effects such as joint stiffness and early arthritis. If you are considering adding a Scottish Fold cat to your family, you must be aware and prepared of this condition and potential necessary management. Scottish Straights DO NOT inherit this gene therefore are NOT at risk of osteochondrodyspalsia, even if they have a folded ear parent.
Pedigree:
A British cat can only be bred to another British cat. No outcrosses are permitted.
Scottish cats can be bred to another Scottish (Straight to Fold or Straight to Straight), or outcrossed to British or American Shorthair. From both types of outcrosses, the kittens are considered Scottish. No other outcrosses are allowed. Outcrossing is done to bring in genetic diversity or improve type / structure.
The British and Scottish cats have laid back personalities and require minimal care. We try to match up kittens with families based on activity levels and temperament.
What you can expect...
-All cats need quality fresh food daily, and access to clean, fresh water, preferably filtered. We feed our kittens wet food 2x daily (AM & PM) as well as leave dry food out 24/7. We use bowls for our younger kittens, and fountains for our older kittens and cats.
-Litter Boxes should be scooped a minimum of 1x daily. Best practice is 2x daily as well as sanitized when replacing the litter (1x a month or more frequently as needed).
-Activity: While your kitty is fine being alone while you're at work, these breeds enjoy the company of their humans and will follow you around the house. They love a good play session and as adults sleep A LOT.
-Shorthair kittens / cats require the least amount of grooming and should be brushed 1-3 times a week.
-Longhair kittens / cats require the most grooming and should be brushed DAILY to prevent matting. Occasionally longhair kittens/ cats can get stool stuck to their bottom and need a quick touch up. Sanitary trims are also an option. Longhair cats shed LESS than shorthairs.
-Folded ear kittens / cats need help cleaning their ears, typically 1x a week. These pets should also receive Cosequin supplements daily for joint health.
-Typically our kittens DO NOT have teary eyes and require minimal maintenance. Some kittens / cats produce more tearing, especially those with flatter faces, and need help cleaning their eyes more frequently to prevent tear stains.
-Kittens need their nails trimmed 1x a week (a great time to check & clean ear wax if needed) & older kittens or cats every 2 weeks. Silicone nail covers are also an option but we don't find the need to use them with regular clipping and providing cat friendly scratching areas as well as consistent training and redirection in early life.
-Bathing is not required as cats clean themselves although can be done every 6 weeks or several months as needed. Bathing more frequently during shedding season helps to remove loose hair and encourage new growth. Some cats have greasier coats and require more frequent baths to maintain coat condition.
We think it is important to preserve and improve the breed standard / quality of the British and Scottish cats. Cat Shows help breeders to 'confirm' they are breeding to standard and be recognized in the community for upholding these values. We encourage you to support breeders who invest into their cats and kittens by participating in shows and have experience in properly evaluating their cats.
We show with LCWW, TICA, and CFA in the PNW primarily and invite you to see us at a local show and meet our kitties!
At a show, each cat or kitten is evaluated / examined physically by multiple experts and judges and compete against cats of other breeds. They are judged for conformation (structure), temperament, and matching the breed standard.
This is a unique environment that puts them under stress and not every cat is fit for showing even if they meet the breed standard physically. Imagine hundreds of new people, smells, and other cats, and even dogs can be present all at once. Your kitty needs to have the temperament to endure this and not be phased as well as be comfortable being handled by strangers and judges throughout the day with little breaks.
They are also compared to other breeds by scores received and can win 'Titles". There are entry and travel fees associated with attending any show. For example a local show (within 8hrs drive) can cost us anywhere from $400-$1000+ to attend. It is an expensive hobby in itself as there are no cash prizes awarded, only recognition / prestige. Our cats first compete against other cats in their breed and then against other breeds and can earn 'Best of Breed'. They then may be selected under the judges discretion for Finals such as The Top 10 Best of the Best of all cats competing that day or in a certain category such as longhairs or shorthairs and go on earn championships.
You may view each of our parent's accomplishments on their sire / dam's bio.
Cat shows are a great way to connect with breeders, pet vendors, rescues, and cat lovers!
We are open to working with credible breeders involved in the Cat Fancy who are willing to do ALL recommended preventative testing on their breeding stock AND share similar values for their cattery AND prioritize health.
